Lares Trek Description |
For trekkers wanting to get off the beaten tourist path and escape to a part of Peru that has changed little over the last 500 years, a trek through the spectacular scenery of the Lares Valley is a must. This remote and rarely visited region offers the trekker an insight into the real lives of the Andean farmer, dressed in their traditional brightly colored ponchos. You’ll have the opportunity to see thatched stone houses surrounded by herds of llamas and alpacas, while inside the houses you’ll see guinea pigs running loose. The trek itself is rated at moderate difficulty- similar to the Inca Trail. There are, however, two passes over 13,000 ft / 4000 meters above sea level, so it is essential that you are well acclimatized to the altitude before starting the trek.

Itinerary
Day 1: Cuzco- Calca- Lares- Huacahuasi
You will leave from Cusco early in the morning and travel through the Sacred Valley arriving at the Lares hot springs, where you will have the option to spend the morning in the medicinal waters. After lunch you will begin the trek with a two hour hike to the first campsite.
Day 2: Huacahuasi- Patacancha
Continuing through the valley, you will arrive in Huacawasi. People here produce some of the finest weavings in Peru. Here, you will have the chance to observe their great skills and brilliant techniques in the fabrication of ponchos and other garments. Passing the village you will begin hiking up to Condor Pass (4300 meters above sea level). From here, you will have stunning views of Mount Veronica (5750 meters). Descending gradually for about one hour, you will arrive at the beautiful Epsaycocha Lake. Your last campsite will be made in Patacancha.
Day 3: Patacancha- Wylloq- Pumamarka- Ollantaytambo
On the final day of the trek the trail leads downhill to a lookout point overlooking a wide valley. Descending into the valley, you will arrive to the Huylloc community where you will have lunch. From here it will take two hours to arrive at Pumamarka, where you can explore the Inca terraces. Your hike ends at Ollantaytambo. At this point you may make a tip pool with the other hikers, and present it to the guide, who will then distribute it throughout the team. Remember that these tips are voluntary, so feel free to tip according to the service you have received.
You then could choose to take an afternoon train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes to continue your trip onto Machu Picchu. Otherwise you will have a transfer back to the city of Cuzco.
