Ausangate Circuit Description |
Ausangate Mountain is the highest mountain in the Cordillera Vilcanota, towering in the southeast sky from the city of Cusco. It is a long, rugged mountain, with two high peaks rising from its jagged summit crest.
The peak of Ausangate is considered by the local people to be sacred and it is the central most powerful point of pilgrimage for today’s Inca descendents.
A high and wild trekking circuit winds its way through this rarely-visited range, following lovely alpine valleys which are home to Quechua Indian herdsmen and some of Peru's most spectacular wildlife, including vicuñas and the Andean birds. Traversing this pristine and beautiful region, we enjoy a series of wonderful lakeside camps and cross several high passes.
This is a challenging trek, with several high passes and often freezing cold nights. |

Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco - Tinqui - Upis
We drive about four hours on a newly upgraded highway to Tinqui (4,000m), a village on the high plains east of Cusco where we start our trek. We follow a wide gently climbing path towards the northwest face of the massive mountain Ausangate. We pass through fields and by scattered farm houses, and later in the day we start to see llamas and alpacas. We camp at Upis 4435m where we are surrounded by snow capped mountains. 5 to 6 hours. There are thermal springs at Upis where we can enjoy a hot swim at the end of the day.
Day 2: Upis - Arapa Pass - Hatun Pucacocha Lake
Our first pass today. We climb for 2 to 2 ½ hours to Arapa Pass 4757m. From the pass we first traverse across an arid hillside and then we descend, sometimes quite steeply into a valley of deep blue glacial lakes and waterfalls. We camp by the lake Laguna Jatun Pucacocha 4585m which is at the bottom of one of the Ausangate glaciers, around 6 hours for the day.
Day 3: Hatun Pucacocha Lake - Huchuy Finaya
A hard day. We leave camp and climb steadily to Apacheta Pass 4850m. We descend to a beautiful lake Ausangatecocha formed by a melting glacier. From the lake we climb again steeply on glacial moraine to the highest point on the trek Palomani Pass 5165m. From the pass there are extensive views of all the peaks in the Cordillera Vilcanota. We traverse and descend, sometimes steeply dropping into the valley, then follow the valley down to camp near the remote village of Pampacancha 4500m. Around 6 to 7 hours.
Day 4: Huchuy Finaya - Qomercocha Lake - Tillacocha Lake
We follow up the Jampamayo River gorge to the small village of stone houses at Jampa 4650m. Towards Jampa the valley opens out more and the spectacular peak of Señal Nevado Pico Tres 6093m is in view. From Jampa we continue rising, then the trail starts to climb steeply to our highest campsite near the lakes Lagunas Tillacocha 4800m. Around 5 hours.
Day 5: Qomercocha Lake - Pacchanta Village
We circle around the lakes Tillacocha and climb for 1½ to 2 hours to the last pass Jampa Pass 4950m which is surrounded by glaciers, huge mountains and glacial lakes. We descend down towards the village of Pacchanta 4250m. We camp near the village and we can visit hot springs there.
Day 6: Pacchanta - Tinki - Cusco
An easy, three hour walk across open fields allows us our final close views of Ausangate, and brings us back to the village of Tinqui, where we meet our transport and return to Cusco.
